Chalk Paint Furniture- How I turned my sofa table into a tv stand

Sofa table project that I turned into a tv stand

Happy Saturday!

Are you a fellow DIY’er like me or absolutely new to painting projects?? You guys…you HAVE to try chalk paint…at least once. Let me tell you why I love it…

  1. I’m a mom to an (almost)1 yr old soooo I cherish any time i can get when the babe is snoozin and chalk paint is easy peasy….no prep…really! I didn’t sand a bit to prepare i just opened the can and went to town.
  2. No prep also means no primer and less coats= more me time.
  3. Little to no odor- I painted this inside my house, how else am I supposed to do fun projects in winter?

So to sum it all up, chalk paint is great if: you are short on time, a beginner, a complete moron, or if you just love the look! Win win for everyone!!

The project:

I decided I wanted to move our TV from the mantel of our fireplace to the wall. I desperately wanted a fireplace in our new house so I decided i could NOT waste a chance at mantel decorating. Problem: we had no TV stand and we didn’t want to spend much money on one. We shopped and shopped and just couldn’t find a great option. And glass door and tiny hands don’t mix well. We’ve had this stupid sofa table forever that I don’t love so the light bulb went off in my head to try it. Problem solved! And instead of spending $150-200, it just costs us some paint. WIN WIN

I almost forgot to take a before pic!

The paint: Valspar Chalky Paint (I bought mine at Lowe’s) I picked a color swatch from some other brand, took it up to the counter and they matched the color for me! They have their own colors but I just had them match what I wanted! I did 2 coats. You don’t have to be a perfect painter when it comes to this stuff!  I did get out my sandpaper and distressed a few areas around the edges where I wanted it to look worn by lightly sanding which allowed the brown wood to show thru the teal paint.

The finish:Chalky Clear Sealing Wax and Chalky Antique Sealing Wax I knew I definitely wanted to seal it but I was scared to death of the antiquing wax! Wax is easy, you just paint thin layers on with a brush then wipe off with a rag working in small sections. You apply the clear wax first. It honestly looked great after that but I wanted more (yes I’m greedy!) The antique wax works FAST!! It’s dark and scary BUT don’t let it get the best of you. I tested out an inconspicuous area first since I was so terrified, then I liked it so I got brave. I decided to randomly wipe it on areas mainly over the distressed part and not do the entire piece. I can’t wait to try it out on a piece that has lots of nooks and crannies and details which I believe this wax to be perfect for.

I didn’t even have to change out the handles on the drawers because they match with the rest of my decor but you totally could if you wanted to switch it up! It was SO shockingly bright when I first started and I had a bit of a panicked “what the HELL did I do?!” but I kept going trusting my vision and I’m so glad I did! I added these Storage Totes for Emersyn’s toys (instant toy box) and our hardware to the TV is hidden in the drawer.  Click here to find out how we hid all of our ugly TV cords! I’m in love!

Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do!
