Turquoise Ombre French Provincial Dresser

Ombre Chalk Painted French Provincial Dresser Makeover

Ooh la la! It’s no secret that I love french provincial style furniture..but combined with my ultimate favorite color, turquoise, it makes for a beautiful & stunning piece that just pops in your room!

I found this piece at my local thrift store (thanks to a tip from my cousin who knows I love FP) & fell in love. Dixie brand & wooden, this piece HAD to come home with me! I was currently re-arranging our bedroom & had just the spot for this beauty (I moved my gallery wall to a different spot )which I planned to match to my bedroom comforter & play off of those colors. My main dresser is french provincial as well but it is off white so I wanted to add color with this new dresser.

There she is before…I always forget to take great before pics….but you get the idea…

Of course the dresser was the typical FP yellow. It was dingy & oh so dirty…she definitely needed a good bath before her makeover. And if you’ve read my post about How to Paint Furniture, you know this is a super important step! I removed, cleaned, & spray painted my hardware with my favorite gold spray. (actually, hubby sprayed them for me since I’m pregnant, thanks hubby!) Then using Valspar Chalky Paint from Lowe’s in the color Theatre Wrap, I painted the entire dresser. After the 1st coat I realized I wanted a little bit of contrast so I grabbed an old can of turquoise paint I had & painted a drawer front to see what it would look like. The turquoise ended up playing off my comforter well so I decided to try my hand at ombre to play off the various hues of turqoise & blues in my bedroom. I did this by starting off with a cup of the straight turquoise then mixing in some Theatre Wrap, then a little more, then just using Theatre Wrap, to mixing in a little Trousseau Blue, then a little more of that etc. until I got to my last drawer. So in total, I used 3 paint colors to achieve the ombre look.

I was able to preserve the original gold trim but decided it needed more so I retouched it using some of the same gold paint & a brush working VERY quickly (it dries FAST). I think the gold trim with the pretty ornate handles just add the right finishing touches to this piece to really make it stand out! After 2-3 coats of the chalk paint, I sealed the body with wax & the top with my usual sealer for the tops of dressers in order to protect it. In you are a beginner & don’t know anything about sealing furniture, again make sure you read THIS post.

I may be partial but I think it turned out STUNNING! It really adds color to the room & it gives me confidence to do another ombre piece! Have you tried this look before?

My Sweet Emmy
