Halloween With Our Little Woodland Deer

There are 2 types of moms when it comes to Halloween…those who dread the holiday & the pressure of costumes & those who start dreaming up costume ideas a few months in advance in anticipation. I bet you know which mom I am….

Duh..I start thinking (ok OBSESSING) over costumes probably in August… I know I’m not alone…right? Halloween is my 2nd fave holiday following Christmas. I figured I only have a year or 2 before Emmy actually starts giving me her opinion on what she wants to be so until then I get to decide…& this year I decided on a woodland deer.

I’m one of those mom who scoffs at the idea of buying a costume. I mean why buy it for $20 when you can make it with $99 worth in craft supplies” as the saying goes right?! lol JK I actually enjoy making stuff AND it didn’t really cost me an arm & a leg. For those of you wanting to know details of the costume they are all listed below. For those of you who just want to see cute Halloween pics then I won’t bore you with the details…

We started off the day with painting pumpkins. I had it in my head she would make cute little hand prints on a pumpkin…..silly me…

Then came the snow! Snow on Halloween Day! I can’t remember that ever happening here in KC though I’m sure it has…but I surely wasn’t expecting it. So needless to say the cold was a bummer BUT how long can a 1 1/2 yr old really last trick or treating anyways? Well I’ll tell you…not long. When they are that young it is more for the parents’ entertainment than anything. (and entertained I was!) I think she liked her tutu & wearing her fur boots & ringing the 1st door bell but that’s about as far as it went. The first door was answered by a giant M&M & I don’t think she was too impressed…

So off to Grandma’s house we went. First to my mother in law’s & then to my mom & dad’s. Of course they were delighted to see her in her costume & take pics. I was delighted she kept most of her costume on the whole time! I was worried about the antlers but she did surprisingly well with them!

Halloween is over & now I’m stuck with a bunch of candy…my husband isn’t upset about it. I’ve never been much of a candy person…but put some soda & cookies in the house & I can’t stop thinking about it! Luckily they don’t hand that out while trick or treating.

My mom always made a big deal out of Halloween growing up & made a majority of my costumes. Perhaps this is where I get it from. It gives me joy to see it all come together in the end. My best friend Beth growing up used to spend the night at my house every Halloween & we would go trick or treating, come home & trade candy. I will always have fond memories of that… I hope Emmy grows up to feel the same way. Now if only I could get my husband to dress up……    #nevergonnahappen  What did your little one dress up as for Halloween?

*The following contains affiliate links to some of the things I purchased so that you may find them. It does not cost you anything to click on the links or if you decide to purchase.

Bodysuit: turtleneck or regular I actually ordered both but chose the turtleneck because of the colder weather

Tights

Boots

DIY deer antlers- TUTORIAL COMING SOON! My FAVE part of the costume!

DIY tutu

White Fur OR this one from Amazon

Brown Fur OR this one from Amazon

I cut out an oval in the white craft fur and hot glued it to the middle of the bodysuit. Then I hot glued the brown fur trim to the neck & cuffs of the bodysuit. Super easy, but be prepared to get fur everywhere! I took a lint roller to go over the bodysuit to pick up all the extra stray pieces of fur.

  1. […] My 1st attempt at making a tutu for my little girl was for her pink princess 1st birthday party. It turned out so well that I decided to do it again for her deer Halloween costume! […]
