Cat Cart Project- How I turned a cabinet into a hidden litter box!

CAT CART PROJECT

I’m very excited to be sharing this project with you! If you are like me and have cats,  finding the right place for the litter box can be frustrating. I have moved their boxes from one spot to another trying to find the right spot and nothing seemed to be working perfect. We have a 4 bedroom home and there are only 2 of us so the cats are lucky enough to have their own room. (the spare bedroom) I call it the Cat Room. I’ve had fun decorating it and will share more of that later. For the last year or so the litter box has been in the bottom of the closet. I decided I really wanted use out of the closet so I did some research on litter box furniture. There are several things online you can buy that look like coffee tables or regular furniture that blend in with the room so you don’t just have a stinky box out in the open. They are EXPENSIVE!! I couldn’t believe the price! So…being the creative hands on person I am I decided to make this a project for myself. Thus started the thrift store shopping where I finally landed this beauty for around $20.

Yeah I know, totally 70’s (I think?) with a whole lotta orange goin on! But I knew it would be perfect for what I was envisioning. And it has wheels on the bottom BONUS!! I’m assuming this was probably used in a kitchen as a rolling cart at some point.

The Cat Room is red, white, and black with leopard accent. (I’m NOT afraid of color). I sanded the top of this bad boy and Jake took off the doors for me. The rest of this thing is laminate so I didn’t sand it. But I primed the entire thing first. This is really important for laminate especially since you can’t sand it, you need to give the paint something to stick to. During the meantime after the primer dried and before painting, Jake’s parents were nice enough to come over with their saw and cut a square hole in the side for me so the cats can get in and out of it easily. I gave it 2 coats of paint and finished it with polyacrylic to seal it. ( I chose this instead of wax since the cats would be using it and they still have their claws, this sealer allows for a little more wear and tear) I also spray painted the handles silver… and TA DAH!!

Litterbox goes inside and you can put the scoop and other supplies in the drawers!

I put the kitties’ red cat bed on top of it and they love to lay in it and look out the window.

No more stinky litter box out in the open and the cats love it!!

Thank you! It works out really great and the best part is that the litter box is completely hidden!
